CHARLESTON – Nucor Corp., a steel manufacturer with facilities in Canada and the U.S., including several in South Carolina, has applied for a permit to build a $2 billion manufacturing facility in St. James Parish, La. For the last two years, Nucor has been considering sites on which to build a state-of-the-art iron-making facility in the U.S. and abroad. Officials were not available for comment at press time on whether any sites in South Carolina were considered for the new facility.

MYRTLE BEACH -- The sand wars between Myrtle Beach and Virginia Beach have been taken to a new level. Tourism officials in the Virginia city have condemned their counterparts here for "guerrilla marketing" tactics that pit one destination against another. People searching the Web for information on Virginia Beach will quickly see ads that lead them to a new Web page - a site that explains why Myrtle Beach is more affordable and more fun than its northern neighbor.

BLYTHEWOOD -- Business owners in Blythewood, along with support from town leaders, are planning to use hospitality and accommodations tax funds to transform the Blythewood Business Coalition into a chamber of commerce. Some of Blythewood's business owners have long expressed their dissatisfaction with the town’s inability to spend $1.4 million in hospitality and accommodations tax funds they’ve collected since 2003 to promote the town located in Northeast Richland County.

GREENVILLE -- An order for 667 wind turbines from oilman T. Boone Pickens won't affect employment at General Electric Co.'s Greenville plant, a GE spokesman said, despite Rep. Bob Inglis' suggestion that it would lead to "new South Carolina jobs." A spokesman for GE’s Greenville plant said the company hasn’t decided where to build the turbines Pickens ordered as part of plans to build the world’s largest wind farm in Texas.

GAFFNEY – UPS has placed an order with Daimler Trucks North America to supply 500 environmentally-friendly commercial vehicles — the largest order of alternative-fuel and drive train commercial vehicles to date. UPS has ordered 200 hybrid electric vehicles and 300 compressed natural gas vehicles, which will be manufactured by Daimler’s Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation based in Gaffney.

GREENVILLE -- An Upstate start-up company has raised $1.5 million from investors and inked a research deal with the maker of Sylvania light bulbs. Selah Technologies LLC said its new research and development agreement with Osram Sylvania Inc., a manufacturer of lighting products, is aimed at exploring whether its proprietary nanotechnology might be incorporated into the larger company’s products.
