MAULDIN -- Mauldin-based Mount Vernon Mills said it has acquired five chemical companies, expanding the textile firm's chemical business significantly.

This year’s state apple crop was pretty much wiped-out by the Easter freeze. With only about 200 acres of apple orchards in South Carolina, it is not hard for a strategically placed freeze to damage most of the crop — centered almost exclusively in the Upstate.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s June announcement that it was seizing a slew of drug-contaminated seafood imported from China may end up being the push needed to grow an aquaculture industry in America’s federal waters. For years, the United States has lagged significantly behind other countries in seafood production, in spite of the fact that demand for shrimp, salmon, crab, lobster and a slew of cold-blooded sea-dwelling delicacies is on the rise.
