GREER -- A potential economic development crisis for Greer and the rest of the Upstate may have been averted in the short term with the success of initiatives to reduce ground-level ozone. The state health department asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to designate the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson area as having complied with the Clean Air Act.

FLORENCE -- Opponents of Santee Cooper’s proposed Pee Dee Energy Campus banded together to send their message to S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control officials: a coal plant is not needed in the Pee Dee. They submitted a letter and an analysis to DHEC detailing the damage the plant could cause to the environment, the day after Pee Dee Supporters for Progress announced its formation.

MYRTLE BEACH -- AVX Corp., the source of toxic groundwater contamination throughout a Myrtle Beach neighborhood, has filed court papers that could force property owners in the polluted area to help pay for the costs of environmental testing and cleanup. The electronics manufacturer filed a proposed amended complaint last week in federal court that would make those property owners subject to federal laws that require shared liability for environmental contamination.

COLUMBIA -- Economist Don Schunk of Coastal Carolina University said he wasn’t worried by the size of December’s increase in unemployment, but by the trend it reinforced. Since last summer, the state’s jobless rate has been rising, and job growth slowing. Nevertheless, Schunk and economist Doug Woodward of USC were not convinced a recession was coming. For example, new unemployment claims in December was 14 percent lower than in 2006.

SPARTANBURG -- Schwan's Global Supply Chain Inc., a division of The Schwan Food Co., said Thursday it plans to shut down its Spartanburg production facility by the end of March, putting 525 employees out of work. The Spartanburg facility has been part of the company's manufacturing and dessert division since Schwan acquired Mrs. Smith's in 2003.
