GREENVILLE -- Duke Energy said Thursday it submitted a combined construction and operating license application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a proposed two-unit nuclear station in Cherokee County. The company has asked state regulators to approve its decision to spend up to $230 million to develop the nuclear power plant. The company, however, said in a regulatory filing that it hasn't made a final decision to build the William States Lee III Nuclear Station.

GREENVILLE -- Education, health care and tax reform are among the top issues for South Carolina to improve its economic attractiveness, state business leaders said. South Carolina Chamber of Commerce officials outlined their eight-point "2008 Competitiveness Agenda" that they said is necessary for the state to develop a skilled, educated work force that can have economic security, increased productivity and higher income.

NORTH CHARLESTON -- A recent decision to turn down plans for a 216-million-gallon ethanol plant in Chesapeake, Va., has the developer seeking alternative land deals in the Southeast, including South Carolina. The site of the old Macalloy metals plant in North Charleston was up for consideration this summer, but International Bio Energy Virginia officials say they are now looking for a more rural location.

NEWBERRY -- Kraft Foods Global Inc. has added about 440 workers at its meat products plant in Newberry since the beginning of the year, but the hiring isn't over yet. The company will fill another 600 positions, bringing the plant's total employment to about 2,300. That's 1,040 additional jobs for the year.
