NORTH CHARLESTON -- A recent decision to turn down plans for a 216-million-gallon ethanol plant in Chesapeake, Va., has the developer seeking alternative land deals in the Southeast, including South Carolina. The site of the old Macalloy metals plant in North Charleston was up for consideration this summer, but International Bio Energy Virginia officials say they are now looking for a more rural location.

NEWBERRY -- Kraft Foods Global Inc. has added about 440 workers at its meat products plant in Newberry since the beginning of the year, but the hiring isn't over yet. The company will fill another 600 positions, bringing the plant's total employment to about 2,300. That's 1,040 additional jobs for the year.

MOUNT PLEASANT -- South Carolina’s oldest advertising agency joined one of the state’s largest advertising and public relations firms in a merger effective Tuesday. Mount Pleasant-based Advertising Service Agency, founded in 1931, is dropping its name and merging with Columbia-based Chernoff Newman in a move that will bring the two companies’ annual billings to more than $50 million.

Figures released during the 27th annual Economic Outlook Conference at the University of South Carolina indicate that South Carolina’s economy is slowing amid a downturn in consumer retail spending, which is projected to grow just slightly above inflation. Douglas Woodward, director of the division of research and professor of economics at the Moore School of Business, said part of the issue is psychological.

COLUMBIA -- South Carolina’s business climate has grabbed some attention of late. The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council ranked South Carolina eighth best on its Small Business Survival Index. According to SBE Council President and CEO Karen Kerrigan, South Carolina benefits from no death tax, no individual and corporate alternative minimum taxes, being a right-to-work state and low unemployment taxes.
