FLORENCE -- Zenta, a business and knowledge process outsourcing company, has established a 35,000 square foot operations center in Florence and will employ up to 250 people. The move to Florence is a result of growing client outsourcing needs for residential mortgage services.

Senate votes to limit payday lending Print E-mail

COLUMBIA -- The S.C. Senate voted Tuesday to curb payday lending, passing a provision even tougher than a compromise reached last week and coming close to considering a ban on the high-interest, two-week loans. During hours of debate, senators supporting a ban reminded colleagues that Georgia and North Carolina essentially have banned the industry.

Governor to sign health care bill for small businesses Print E-mail

COLUMBIA -- Small businesses can pool purchasing power to negotiate cheaper insurance rates under legislation Gov. Mark Sanford will sign Tuesday. The measure will allow a group of at least 10 employers to pool their purchasing power when negotiating insurance rates. The existing law required insurance cooperatives to have at least 1,000 eligible employees. Advocates said businesses could save 20%, but the true impact is unknown.

Morris begins prison Print E-mail

GREENVILLE -- Former Lt. Gov. Earle Morris Jr. was taken into custody Wednesday to begin serving his 44-month sentence for defrauding investors of a Pickens-based investment company. Agents took Morris into custody and transferred him to the Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center in Columbia.

Insurance ideas unveiled Print E-mail

COLUMBIA -- A coalition of medical, insurance and business leaders today will propose a starting point for extending health care coverage to the 700,000 South Carolinians without it. Their plan centers on raising the state’s 7-cent cigarette tax to 90 cents per pack — nearly triple the proposed increase now before lawmakers — to provide medical insurance for 160,000 persons. It is the first proposal with specific recommendations on how money gained by taxing smokers more should pay for health care instead of to provide income-tax cuts.
