WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has agreed to forgive $51 million of the money it is owed by South Carolina for Medicare Part D costs. The state still owes more than $117 million to offset the cost of prescription drug coverage for state residents eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. |

COLUMBIA -- The American Lung Association has given South Carolina and five other states straight F’s for their smoking prevention programs. Tuesday, the organization released its State of Tobacco Control 2009 report, which grades the strength of federal and state laws to protect citizens from tobacco-caused illnesses. |

FLORENCE -- GE Healthcare announced it will increase production at its Florence County manufacturing plant and hire up to 25 employees as a result of the growth of the global market for magnetic resonance imaging. During the past 18 months, GE Healthcare also has hired 18 engineers at its Florence facility. GE, a multinational American technology and services conglomerate, has 323,000 employees worldwide. |
