Acceleration Sports halts operation in Spartanburg Print E-mail

SPARTANBURG -- The Acceleration Sports Institute in the $22 million, four-story Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas building at 1650 Skylyn Drive has abruptly closed. Members arrived at the institute Monday, looking forward to working with trainers, but were surprised to be met with a note posted on the gym's door.

Financial turnaround for Providence Hospitals Print E-mail

COLUMBIA -- Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals in Columbia said Tuesday it posted a profit last year — its first since 2004 — completing a two-year turnaround under the leadership of Sister Judith Ann Karam. Providence finished 2007 with a $5.7 million profit versus a loss of $1.4 million a year ago and a $2.4 million loss in 2005, just before Karam took over at Providence. The turnaround was accomplished by improving financial operations, controlling costs and making staffing adjustments.

FLORENCE --  Carolinas Hospital System recently joined the ranks of McLeod Health, Doctor’s Care and First Choice Health Care, which are among those to establish urgent care centers in the Pee Dee. Recently, McLeod Health opened an urgent care center on West Palmetto Street. Doctor’s Care is in the midst of opening two locations in Florence: one on Hoffmeyer Road and one on South Irby Street.

MUSC opens new Ashley River Tower Print E-mail

CHARLESTON -- About 60 patients checked in to the new facility Monday and the first surgeries will take place today at the 156-bed tower, designed to look more like a high-end hotel than a hospital. The 156-bed tower with its massive curved glass façade — meant to evoke the image of a sailboat — will house the hospital’s cardiovascular and digestive disease centers.
