CHARLESTON -- Charleston-area health care and civic leaders met last week to offer a local and multifaceted perspective on health care reform. The discussion was part of many community meetings being held across the country at the request of the President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team to help shape policy and the next set of moves in health care.

CHARLESTON -- Lab21, a United Kingdom-based health care products and services company, plans to establish operations in South Carolina. The company announced it has received $3.2 million in private equity to continue its acquisition plan and establish U.S. operations here. However, Lab21 is not giving specifics about its planned U.S. operations.

CHARLESTON -- The most recent 7% across-the-board budget cut from the state led to a reduction in services for Medicaid programs, as the agency has seen $137 million cut from its budget this fiscal year.

CHARLESTON -- Charles River Laboratories International announced it will invest $20 million over the next five years in a new research and warehouse facility in Charleston that will employ 60 research and production workers. The Wilmington, Mass.-based company already has a research facility in Charleston it has operated since 1994.
