BEAUFORT -- Beaufort Memorial Hospital ranks among the top 5% in the nation for gastrointestinal surgery and top 10% for orthopedic and spine surgery, according to the 10th annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study issued Monday.

South Carolina will put an extra $1 million into the pockets of nursing faculty at its public colleges and universities this year to address a shortage of registered nurses. Nursing schools across the nation are turning away qualified applicants mainly because of a lack of nursing faculty and clinical training facilities, said Eula Aiken, director of the Southern Regional Education Board Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing.

COLUMBIA -- The Columbia area’s three hospital systems received state approval Monday for nearly $190 million in expansions in high-growth regions of the Midlands. The Irmo area gets its first hospital, with Palmetto Health expanding the Parkridge emergency-care facility.
