Automaker plans expansion at Spartanburg facility Print E-mail

SPARTANBURG -- BMW Manufacturing Co., gearing up to increase its production capacity, is planning a significant expansion of its Spartanburg County facility, according to sources familiar with the plan. Sources said the details have not been finalized, but said the expansion would be "major." The official announcement could come within weeks, the sources said.

FORT MILL -- The path for new jobs and more investment in York County has been cleared for the Ross Dress For Less distribution center in Fort Mill. Ross, York County's largest private employer, was issued a five-year extension on tax incentives by the York County Council last week, suggesting an expansion is possible in the future. The California-based discount clothing retailer came to York County in 2002 after county officials offered tax breaks in exchange for new jobs and substantial investment.

Michelin invests in R&D Print E-mail

CLEMSON -- Michelin is investing $6.8 million in a research and development project focused on further improving vehicle fuel economy by reducing tire rolling resistance. The money will support the company’s research efforts in South Carolina and include a $1.9 million research contract with Clemson University and its International Center for Automotive Research. The work will begin immediately and is set to be completed over three years.

SUMMERVILLE -- American LaFrance will close two South Carolina facilities as part of its reorganization plan filed with the bankruptcy court Sunday. The court has set March 3 to approve the company's disclosure statement and April 9 to approve the confirmation of the plan. The company also filed a motion to sell the assets of the company if the plan is not approved.

DUNCAN -- A German supplier of glass and plastic moldings for the European automotive industry has chosen Duncan for the site of its North American manufacturing operations. Richard Fritz Group, based in Stuttgart, Germany, has built a $6 million plant at 150 Parkway West off Highway 290 and Congress Boulevard in Duncan, the company announced Thursday.
