FOUNTAIN INN -- BIC USA Inc. said Wednesday that it plans to close its manufacturing plant in Fountain Inn in June 2010, which would affect the 29 people that work there. The company would begin reductions in March and would be completed when the plant closes.

GEORGETOWN -- A tentative agreement was reached Saturday to develop a new union contract that will govern thousands of employees at ArcelorMittal Steel, including the plant in Georgetown. The issues had involved retiree health care and investment in the plants, said James Sanderson, president of Union Local 7898 in Georgetown. The details of the agreement were not given.

GAFFNEY -- Freightliner Chassis Corp., one of the top 10 employers in Cherokee County, announced Wednesday an additional 225 layoffs effective Sept. 15. The cutbacks are the second round in recent weeks, and both are in addition to a curtailing of work hours for many employees that came earlier in the year.

MYRTLE BEACH -- The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution stating the city's opposition to a permit that would let AVX Corp. emit hazardous pollutants into the air near its headquarters on 17th Avenue South. Some council members also said they will consider zoning changes and other laws that would make it impossible for AVX to continue operating at the site.
