COLUMBIA -- The effort to bring new retailers downtown has landed its first new shop in a familiar location: the old Capitol Newsstand space. The Uptown gift boutique will open in mid-October at 1204 Main St. The Uptown gift boutique will open at 1204 Main St. in mid-October, probably with a soft launch and a later grand opening, said Amy Stone, vice president of retail development.

MYRTLE BEACH -- Businesses surrounding Myrtle Beach's biggest new developments -- The Market Common housing and retail center and the first-of-its-kind Hard Rock theme park -- were poised for a big boost when the two opened in April. But even though those businesses say the projects have brought in some extra customers, many haven't seen a significant influx.

Tax-free shopping weekend begins Friday Print E-mail

COLUMBIA -- With shoppers looking for more savings in tight times, this year’s school-time S.C. sales tax holiday could approach records, state officials predict. Shoppers have saved an average of $2.8 million in state sales tax each year since the three-day event started in 2000. The high mark of $3.6 million came in the event’s inaugural year. The ninth-annual tax-free weekend begins at midnight Friday and concludes at midnight on Aug. 3.

New Wal-Mart coming to Grand Strand Print E-mail

MYRTLE BEACH -- A new Wal-Mart Supercenter will be built off of U.S. Highway 501 in the Carolina Forest area outside  Myrtle Beach. It is scheduled to open in the spring of 2009 and will be the anchor store in Myrtle Ridge Crossing. There will also be four junior anchor stores and specialty shops.

Michelin to try retailing at shopping mall Print E-mail

GREENVILLE -- Michelin on Main in downtown Greenville has been such a success for the tire maker that it plans to open a store in an Upstate mall to test its branded merchandise in a strictly retail environment. The company, with its North American headquarters in Greenville, plans to open ShopMichelin in Westgate Mall in Spartanburg late next month. The 2,000-square-foot store was designed by Neal Prince Architects.
