ST. HELENA ISLAND -- Plans for a Publix grocery store on St. Helena Island have been scrapped, a company spokesman said Friday, following a letter-writing campaign opposing the development.

SPARTANBURG -- Do-it-yourselfers might soon have another home improvement store to frequent for those weekend projects. E.C. Barton and Co., a national retailer of lumber and building materials, plans to open an outlet store from its Surplus Warehouse division in Spartanburg.

MYRTLE BEACH -- Two Wal-Mart stores planned for Horry County are on track. One, near Carolina Forest, has up to two years to start construction, said David Schwerd, principal planner with Horry County.

GAFFNEY -- The Bombay Co. Inc. is going out of business across the country. The outlet store at Prime Outlets Gaffney and the store at Haywood Mall in Greenville are among those closing.

LEXINGTON -- First Community Bank president Mike Crapps said he knew more business would come to Red Bank. In the year since Wal-Mart announced plans to open a superstore in the rural Lexington County community, the Lexington-based bank has seen loans at its branch — mostly commercial — double and deposits have climbed 31 percent, Crapps said Wednesday.
