Congress extends COBRA subsidy through March Print E-mail

CHARLESTON -- Congress has extended to March 31 the cutoff date for laid-off workers to be eligible for a federal subsidy if they are staying on their employers’ health insurance plan. The subsidy program allows certain workers who were terminated involuntarily since September 2008 to re-join or stay on their former employer’s group health insurance plan for 35% of the premium cost.

The S.C. Senate passed its own plan to reform the state’s troubled Employment Security Commission, after hammering out a compromise over the governor’s control of the new agency. The Senate had struggled to reconcile differing views on whether the new Department of Workforce would be part of the governor’s Cabinet, with some leery of adding to the authority of the executive branch.

Senate passed its version of Employment Security Commission reform Wednesday after President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell crafted a compromise to bridge the gap between those who wanted the agency’s chief to be picked by the governor and those who were leery of adding to the authority of the executive branch.

COLUMBIA -- The S.C. House passed a bill Wednesday that would greatly restructure the state Employment Security Commission, which has been the target of withering criticism amid the recession. The House voted to create a new Department of Workforce, combining ESC functions with Workforce Investment Act duties.

COLUMBIA -- The S.C. Chamber of Commerce called Friday for the leadership of the embattled Employment Security Commission to step down. It’s time for the interim agency director and three appointed commissioners to go, said chamber CEO Otis Rawl, so that new officers could “get it going in the right direction.”
