COLUMBIA -- Immigration reform is at the top of many state lawmakers’ lists, and reform appears likely during this year’s session. Wednesday marked the first deadline for lawmakers to pre-file bills for the upcoming session that begins Jan. 8. Bills for the S.C. Senate were available online Wednesday. House bills won’t be available until today.

CHARLESTON -- Citing the city of Charleston’s “good faith undertaking of an independent and comprehensive review” of its fire department in the wake of the catastrophic June fire that claimed the lives of nine firefighters, a state occupational safety board announced Monday it was reducing fines levied against the department by slightly less than two-thirds. The reduction of fines from $9,325 to $3,160 is the result of a settlement agreement between S.C. OSHA and the city of Charleston.

MYRTLE BEACH --The Grand Strand area was the state's leader in job growth during the first nine months of the year at 2.9 percent, but it also saw the biggest drops in home construction, according to a report released Monday by University of South Carolina economists. The national economy is in for a rough ride 2008, but data don't indicate a recession, said a university research economist.

GREENVILLE -- The state's economy will be sluggish in the coming year, and that poses unique challenges for the Upstate, including Greenville and Spartanburg, University of South Carolina economists said during a conference Monday. Greenville is among the state's metropolitan areas posting the fastest job growth in 2007, according to a report that research economists Doug Woodward and Paulo Guimaraes presented to business leaders.

COLUMBIA -- South Carolina’s jobless rate rose to 5.8 percent in October as about 2,100 more South Carolinians joined the ranks of the unemployed, the S.C. Employment Security Commission reported Tuesday. Despite the worsening unemployment from September’s 5.7 percent rate, the number of jobs in the state continued to rise.
