COLUMBIA -- The state's jobless rate rose sharply to 6.6 percent in December as construction jobs continued to fall, the S.C. Employment Security Commission reported Friday. The rate increased from 5.7 percent in November after seasonal adjustments, with about 16,000 people joining the ranks of the unemployed.

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Department of Commerce announced that 2007 was another record-breaking year for the recruitment of jobs and investment to South Carolina. The numbers point to strong economic activity, large job creation levels in non-urban areas, world-class companies choosing to invest heavily in South Carolina, growth in the state’s manufacturing sector, and a diversity of industry investments.

COLUMBIA -- The S.C. House of Representatives unveiled another immigration reform bill Monday, setting up a battle with the Senate over whose version should be enacted. Leaders of both sides have said immigration will be a priority for the 2008 session. House Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, said the House proposal is more wide-reaching than a package the Senate approved in 2007.

CHERAW -- Cafe Enterprises, the parent company of Fatz Cafe, a 40-unit Southeastern restaurant chain, is bringing 120 new jobs to Chesterfield County. The chain plans to open a casual restaurant geared toward families in late January. The new Fatz Cafe will be located at 973 Chesterfield Highway and will be hiring associate managers and kitchen and service staff.

GREENVILLE -- December graduates should expect a healthy job market to continue next year, according to officials at the University of South Carolina Career Center. The center, which monitors recruitment efforts of companies seeking to hire seniors, reported a 6 percent increase in on-campus interviews scheduled between mid-September and mid-November. Also, job-fair registrations increased by 21 percent, with 7 percent of registrations by companies that had not previously recruited at the university.
