Utility companies statewide experienced record levels of peak electricity demand early Monday morning. Santee Cooper, S.C. Electric & Gas and Progress Energy Carolinas all set peak demand records as temperatures dipped to 22 degrees in Charleston, 14 in Florence and 15 in Columbia, according to National Weather Service data.

Hearn to join S.C. Supreme Court this week Print E-mail

COLUMBIA -- Kaye Hearn, who is currently chief judge of the S.C. Court of Appeals, will join the S.C. Supreme Court on Thursday. Hearn will be the second female justice to serve on the state’s Supreme Court. Chief Justice Jean Toal was the first woman elected to the state’s highest court, in 1988.

COLUMBIA -- South Carolina’s recruitment of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner assembly plant to North Charleston continues to draw attention. Acknowledging Boeing’s site selection, Business Facilities magazine just named the S.C. Department of Commerce its 2009 Deal of the Year award winner. The Commerce Department is featured in the magazine’s January issue.

Carolina First raises $23,000 in 12 days Print E-mail

GREENVILLE -- Carolina First announced that its customers and employees had raised more than $23,000 to benefit local children’s charities through the Carolina First 12 Days of Christmas program. Along with the cash contributions, hundreds of toys and items such as food and toiletries were delivered to 17 charities throughout the states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

I-385 rehabilitation project begins Jan. 4 Print E-mail

GREENVILLE -- The S.C. Department of Transportation will begin an eight-month project to repair and widen 15 miles of Interstate 385 on Jan. 4. The project consists of milling some of the existing asphalt interstate and replacing it with approximately 10 inches of high-strength concrete.
