Charleston’s Channel 5 has been sold to Raycom Media as part of a $583 million deal with Lincoln Financial Group. The sale includes two other southeastern television stations and a sports syndication business, which Lincoln Financial acquired in a merger with Jefferson Pilot in 2006.

Television conglomerate Raycom Media Inc. of Montgomery, Ala., owner of some 50 TV stations in markets serving more than 20 states, could be poised to purchase the TV assets of Lincoln Financial Media, parent company of WCSC-TV Channel 5 in Charleston, according to published reports. Raycom Media could not be reached this week for comment. Channel 5 referred all questions to its corporate offices.

CHARLESTON -- Since the discount air carrier landed in Charleston, flights have increased dramatically at the international airport. AirTran Holdings Inc., the airline’s parent company serving Charleston and 54 other cities around the nation, posted record third-quarter earnings.

NORTH CHARLESTON -- The economic development community is standing by the quality of training for workers at the Vought Aircraft Industries and Global Aeronautica plants received from the state’s technical college system. This pronouncement came after Boeing officials announced on Oct. 10 that problems throughout its supply chain would delay initial deliveries of the 787 Dreamliner by about six months.

LADSON -- The $376.6 million order from the U.S. Marine Corps is the second-largest in the Ladson company’s history. More than 400 of the mine-resistant vehicles will be produced by a division of General Dynamics Corp., though all work will be done in Ladson.

Two of CaroLinks’ biggest initial investors are suing the company in the wake of revelations that the S.C. Attorney General’s office is investigating the firm and its founder, Lucy Duncan-Scheman, for securities fraud. G. Robert Kraus Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., and a relative, George Kraus, of Southampton, N.Y., are two of the 27 CaroLinks’ investors identified by only their initials in a recent order issued Oct. 12 against the company by the S.C. Attorney General’s securities division.

The  hydrogen fuel industry could be on the horizon of South Carolina’s future economic prosperity, but before hydrogen-powered cars begin buzzing down the state’s highways, the alternative fuel must first be embraced in more feasible and cost-effective applications. One such application being explored in South Carolina is fuel cell-powered forklifts, primarily those used in indoor facilities that operate around the clock.

CHARLESTON -- CaroLinks has settled a lawsuit filed by a North Carolina developer over a $500,000 loan given to the Charleston-based logistics company in support of its plans to establish an inland port with a direct rail connection to North Charleston. But the settlement was just one event in a month of financial developments for the company, which last month sold the land options it held on nearly 1,300 acres in Orangeburg to Dubai-based Jafza International.

Santee Cooper, the Belle W. Baruch Foundation and the Clemson University Restoration Institute will study whether coastal Georgetown County’s winds are strong enough to fuel commercially viable electricity. This will be the third wind research project involving Santee Cooper and Clemson University, which also have projects ongoing with Coastal Carolina University in Horry County and in North Charleston.
 
Supplier snafu prompts Boeing to delay 787 Dreamliner Print E-mail

NORTH CHARLESTON -- A parts snafu and other critical problems throughout its supply chain prompted Boeing on Wednesday afternoon to announce a six-month delay in the initial deliveries of the 787 Dreamliner. Deliveries of the Dreamliner, the first commercial aircraft made almost entirely of carbon-fiber based composite materials, are now slated to begin in late November or December 2008.
