SPARTANBURG -- Sheila Breitweiser, former president of the S.C. School for the Deaf and the Blind, has been named executive director and vice president of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation. Breitweiser retired from SCSDB in December after 11 years as president. She's won numerous awards, including the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award given in the state for service.

COLUMBIA -- State workers would receive a 2% pay raise and the state’s commitment to the endowed chairs program would be trimmed by $20 million under a Senate budget passed by its Finance Committee on Thursday. The endowed chairs program is designed to bring high-tech researchers to S.C.

HILTON HEAD -- South Carolina schools will see no money from the state lottery in March, and only received half of the funds they generally see in February, state officials said. Lottery proceeds are down $5.5 million from July to January when compared to the previous year.

BEAUFORT -- Three years ago, Lynn Mulkey was studying how frequently early childhood students are segregated within their classrooms by their ability. The National Institutes of Health gave her three years and $500,000 to do that.
