Who's Who in S.C. Business
Welcome to Who's Who in S.C. Business

In 2006 when we decided to produce a Who’s Who in South Carolina Business in the 2007 winter issue of SCBIZ magazine, we were overly optimistic. We didn’t realize that we were trying to eat an elephant in one bite. What we found was, to list everybody across the state who is a Who’s Who, we would need two or three magazines.

carlos-jimenez_proservices.jpgCreativity is in Carlos Jimenez’s blood. His grandfather was an artist for the Catholic Church in Spain and was sent to Cuba to work on cathedrals and religious art. Jimenez, whose family lived in Cuba a number of years, was born there in the years before Fidel Castro came to power. When he was 7 years old, his family moved to Miami. His brother is an art curator and his sister is an art teacher. “I grew up with several cultures,” said Jimenez, chairman and CEO of the bounce agency in Greenville. “Diversity and creativity—I grew up around it.”

BANKING AND FINANCE
chris-nowell.jpgAs an accountant for a large corporation, Chris Nowell gained invaluable experience and opportunities to advance his career within a corporate setting. For many, that would have been the perfect job. But for Nowell, a family man with a desire to grow roots within his community and his business, a smaller firm was a much better fit. Nowell left the corporate world about three years ago with two co-workers, who are now his business partners, to run a small but multi-faceted accounting and business advisory firm in Charleston. In this setting, Nowell relishes the opportunity to work on a highly personal level with his clients and help their companies flourish as well as grow a successful business relationship with his customers and their employees.

thom-penney.jpgIt’s hard to say whether Thompson E. Penney has had more influence on the architectural firm he runs or if it has had more influence on him. It has been more than 40 years since Penney, then in high school, talked founder Frank Lucas into hiring him as a go-fer at Lucas and Stubbs Associates Ltd. Today, Penney is president and CEO of the company, which has since been renamed LS3P.

EDUCATORS
dr.-jones.jpgA few years ago, fewer than 200 black men were teaching in South Carolina’s elementary schools, a small percentage of the more than 20,000 elementary teachers around the state. Roy I. Jones is trying to improve those numbers. As director of the Call Me MISTER program at Clemson University, Jones is working with black men interested in careers in elementary education.

pj-johnson-2.jpgTeamwork, trust and consistency make up the heart of success. University of South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier understands this concept and displays it by building a foundation for the Gamecocks football program that he hopes in coming years will result in the team’s first-ever Southeastern Conference championship. P.J. Johnson also understands this. As the new CEO of Summerville Medical Center (and devoted Gamecocks fan), Johnson is setting some lofty goals for her own team. She wants to increase the hospital’s reputation and value by improving services and expanding the role the medical center can play within the Summerville community.

LAW
susi-pedrick-mcwilliams.jpgAs a trial lawyer, it is second nature for Susan “Susi” Pedrick McWilliams to anticipate things: the opposing side’s arguments, how the jury might view certain evidence, whether a judge will allow her case to go to trial. While being able to anticipate challenges has been a welcome trait for McWilliams in her work, she also has embraced a few unknowns during her career that turned out better than she expected.
