Furman gets $17M grant from Duke Endowment

GREENVILLE -- Furman University received its largest cash grant ever – $17 million – from the Duke Endowment on Monday. The lion’s share will be used to create a scholarship program for out-of-state students to complement the Hollingsworth Scholarship program for South Carolina residents.

Exec says S.C. should require clean power

COLUMBIA -- South Carolina needs to require that energy companies generate a set portion of their power from clean sources, a top Duke Energy executive said Tuesday. Keith Trent, the chief strategy, policy and regulatory officer for the North Carolina-based utility, said that only a mandate from the state would really get things moving on wind, solar and other types of clean power.

Force Protection back in NASDAQ's good graces

LADSON -- NASDAQ announced Wednesday it would continue to list the MRAP maker's stock after threatening to delist Force Protection Inc. for failing to file SEC reports. Earlier this week, the Marine Corps Systems Command exercised a contract modification Monday for $41.8 million to provide service and support for armored vehicles from Force Protection.

COLUMBIA -- Otis B. Rawl Jr. has succeeded S. Hunter Howard Jr. as president and CEO of the S.C. Chamber of Commerce. Rawl joined the chamber in 2001 as vice president of public policy. In 2004, he was named COO.

Depositors flee Wachovia for S.C. community banks

COLUMBIA -- AWachovia Corp.’s woes have caused a flight of deposits to community banks across South Carolina, as depositors seek protection for their cash in FDIC-insured accounts and stable local institutions, a survey revealed.
