S.C. insurer donates $2 million for high-tech startups

COLUMBIA -- BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has given the single largest donation to the South Carolina Research Authority to support high-technology startups. The Columbia-based insurer gave $2 million it would have paid in state taxes in exchange for a tax credit.

Search nearly over for USC's next president

COLUMBIA -- USC’s Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting Friday to select a new president, trustees said Tuesday after a three-hour, closed-door meeting to discuss the search. Trustees will vote to select one of three finalists, who will be named today or Thursday, said trustee Miles Loadholt.

Agreement on water maybe months away

GREENVILLE – A water-sharing agreement between South Carolina and Georgia could be 18 months away according to a member of the Governor’s Savannah River Committee who spoke about the drought that has gripped the state at the Greenville Rotary Club. Five Upstate counties were upgraded to extreme drought status June 30.

Some to lose insurance discounts after changes

MYRTLE BEACH -- Myrtle Beach property owners have been used to seeing a 25 percent discount in their flood insurance premiums, but a recent federal policy change will exclude some from those savings. Buildings a foot or more below the base flood elevation are no longer eligible.

Company to build ethanol plant in Union County

UNION -- A Virginia company plans to spend more than $160 million building an ethanol plant in the Union County community of Carlisle. Osage Bio Energy LLC of Glen Allen, Va., said Tuesday it would start building the 75-worker plant around the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

Accounting problems plague Columbia

COLUMBIA -- Columbia’s accounting is so tangled that city officials did not realize they have paid about $18 million more for health insurance and other costs in the last three years than was budgeted. The deficit in the city’s risk management fund was largely because of the increase in health insurance costs and claims.
