MUSC sets record raising more than $67 million

CHARLESTON -- The Medical University of South Carolina raised more than $67 million last year in gifts, pledges and payments, setting a record, the school announced Monday. That amount outpaced last year’s $63.6 million fundraising total by almost 6%.

Sign maker investing $5M to move, upgrade

COLUMBIA -- Colite International’s global success is leading the West Columbia-based sign maker to move to new location in the Carolina Research Park off Farrow Road. The company will invest more than $5 million to relocate and upgrade its equipment, according to Marty Brown, the company's chief executive officer.

FedEx hub could ship 470 jobs to Upstate

GREENVILLE -- FedEx is considering the Greenville-Spartanburg area for a new ground hub that could have 470 jobs and $110 million in investment, a company spokesman said Friday. Locations in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Guilford County in North Carolina also are being considered.

MYRTLE BEACH -- Businesses surrounding Myrtle Beach's biggest new developments -- The Market Common housing and retail center and the first-of-its-kind Hard Rock theme park -- were poised for a big boost when the two opened in April. But even though those businesses say the projects have brought in some extra customers, many haven't seen a significant influx.

Municipalities suing travel Web sites over local accommodations taxes

HILTON HEAD --  Some towns in Beaufort County may be not be getting their full share of bed taxes because online booking companies aren't paying the amount they should, according to lawsuits filed in South Carolina and elsewhere throughout the country.

E-Verify system in congressional trouble

COLUMBIA -- A federal immigration database that is the lynchpin of South Carolina’s recently passed immigration law is in congressional trouble. The E-Verify system, used by almost 80,000 employers nationwide to verify new employees’ legal status, is caught in a Senate dispute that could prevent a vote before Congress’ August recess.
