GREENVILLE -- The Upstate's 11.6 percent decrease in residential building permits for the third quarter of 2007 means the region is returning to "more normal levels," said the president of a Knoxville firm that tracks residential and commercial building trends.

Housing keeps slipping

Sales of existing homes across the United States fell by 8% in September, but local real estate pros reiterated their view that there's no such thing as a national market. The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that residential sales registered the largest monthly decline since 1999.

Housing stable in Columbia area

COLUMBIA -- Despite a steep decline in Columbia-area home sales in September, real estate agents remain optimistic because of the area’s traditionally stable market. Sales sank 18% in September over the same month last year, with homes staying on the market an average of 85 days, up nearly 15%, according to data from the S.C. Association of Realtors.

Construction supply retailer to open

SPARTANBURG -- Do-it-yourselfers might soon have another home improvement store to frequent for those weekend projects. E.C. Barton and Co., a national retailer of lumber and building materials, plans to open an outlet store from its Surplus Warehouse division in Spartanburg.

Wal-Mart stores in Horry County are on track

MYRTLE BEACH -- Two Wal-Mart stores planned for Horry County are on track. One, near Carolina Forest, has up to two years to start construction, said David Schwerd, principal planner with Horry County.
