SCSU sets timeline

ORANGEBURG -- South Carolina State University’s presidential search committee set an aggressive timeline Monday to hire a fearless risk-taker with a sense of humor. The university hopes to hire its next president by June. The board of trustees voted not to renew President Andrew Hugine’s contract in December, citing a performance evaluation that charged the president with losing the trust of his staff, among other items.

Access limits conventions

MYRTLE BEACH -- Lack of familiarity and lack of air service remain two of the biggest hurdles the local convention and meeting industry need to tackle, according to research released Tuesday of the Myrtle Beach market. With budgets for meetings and conventions largely staying the same or increasing, there's plenty of room to grow, said John Pelletier, chairman of Equation Research, the Mount Pleasant-based firm that did the study.

Leaders study economic development models

MYRTLE BEACH -- Horry County business and government leaders formed the framework for an overhaul of the county's economic development efforts Tuesday morning at Coastal Carolina University. About 35 area leaders reviewed data, including work force statistics and population estimates, which will help them develop the economic development model.

Sales slow on Strand

MYRTLE BEACH -- People trying to sell homes in the $150,000 to $250,000 price range are facing the harshest competition on the Grand Strand. That price bracket has the most inventory on the market, with 1,942 single-family homes and 2,676 condos listed, according to the year-end report from the Coastal Carolinas Association of Realtors' listing service. The service catches about 80 percent of the listings in Horry and Georgetown counties.

Sanford to address slump

COLUMBIA -- Gov. Mark Sanford promotes his legislative agenda tonight amid an economic slump requiring belt-tightening in state spending. At least $160 million needs to be trimmed for the year starting July 1, partly because of a sluggish economy, experts say. It’s the first time in five years the Republican-controlled General Assembly deals with a revenue slowdown. It comes after tax cuts and increased reliance on the sales tax.

SCBIZ company sold

CHARLESTON -- Bill Settlemyer, founder, owner and publisher of SCBIZ magazine, Charleston Regional Business Journal and its affiliated print and electronic publications, has announced the sale of Setcom Media Inc. to the Brown Publishing Co., a family-owned chain of daily, weekly, niche and business publications based in Ohio. Brown’s company has been traditionally involved in owning daily and weekly general-readership newspapers in Ohio and in other states but that in the past year the focus of Brown Publishing has shifted more toward business publications, he said.
