CHARLESTON -- Bill Settlemyer, founder, owner and publisher of SCBIZ magazine, Charleston Regional Business Journal and its affiliated print and electronic publications, has announced the sale of Setcom Media Inc. to the Brown Publishing Co., a family-owned chain of daily, weekly, niche and business publications based in Ohio. Brown’s company has been traditionally involved in owning daily and weekly general-readership newspapers in Ohio and in other states but that in the past year the focus of Brown Publishing has shifted more toward business publications, he said.

LEXINGTON -- A former S.C. State Ports Authority board member dismissed by Gov. Mark Sanford on Jan. 7 has filed suit in the Lexington County Circuit Court, charging the governor exceeded his powers when he removed him. Sanford pulled Carroll A. “Tumpy” Campbell III, son of former Gov. Carroll A. Campbell Jr. and a one-time political ally, from the board citing a potential conflict of interest regarding lobbying rules.

COLUMBIA -- The South Carolina Supreme Court on Monday unanimously upheld the securities fraud conviction and prison sentence of former Lt. Gov. Earle Morris Jr. Morris' attorneys had no immediate reaction, including whether they would ask the Supreme Court for a rehearing or pursue a federal court appeal. The former chairman of Carolina Investors Inc. was sentenced to 44 months in prison after a jury in November 2004 found him guilty of securities fraud.

The numbers point to strong economic activity, large job creation levels in non-urban areas, world-class companies choosing to invest heavily in South Carolina, growth in the state’s manufacturing sector, and a diversity of industry investments.

ANDERSON -- Anderson is among leading candidates in the Carolinas and Georgia for a VW car plant that would bring hundreds of jobs and heavy investments in a region sorely in need of both. Automotive News, a Detroit trade magazine, reported Saturday that Volkswagen AG was homing in on the South for the plant that would complement its assembly plant in Mexico, citing sources familiar with the project.

FLORENCE -- The extended public comment period for The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s draft air quality construction permit and Preliminary Determination for the proposed Santee Cooper power plant to be built in Kingsburg is scheduled to expire soon. After Jan. 22, DHEC will no longer be take public comment on the highly debated proposed coal-fired power plant. The 600-megawatt coal-fired facility would be located on a 2,709-acre tract along the Great Pee Dee River.
