COLUMBIA -- Gov. Mark Sanford will unveil his fiscal 2008-2009 executive budget Monday, expanding beyond his plans to cut the income tax rate and raise cigarette taxes. While figures won’t be released until then, Sanford again intends to introduce a budget with spending capped at the growth rates in population and inflation, Sawyer said. Several lawmakers, including Sen. President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston, hope to constitutionally mandate such a limit this spring.

CHERAW -- Cafe Enterprises, the parent company of Fatz Cafe, a 40-unit Southeastern restaurant chain, is bringing 120 new jobs to Chesterfield County. The chain plans to open a casual restaurant geared toward families in late January. The new Fatz Cafe will be located at 973 Chesterfield Highway and will be hiring associate managers and kitchen and service staff.

MYRTLE BEACH -- Developers want to build 60,948 square feet of retail and office space at Pink House Square at 4301 N. Kings Highway and could eventually build condos in a second phase. An Eagles store would anchor the $5 million development. There would also be a restaurant, but no other stores or businesses have been announced as part of the project. The Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board approved the lighting plans Thursday. Plans for awnings and construction still have to be approved.

GEORGETOWN --American Gypsum will hire 84 workers, not the 100 it had planned, when the company opens in Georgetown this year, plant manager Steve Wentzel said Thursday. The lagging economy forced the cutback at the plant, which plans to begin operating fully in the next few months. The employment cutback comes at a time when the real estate market and increasing fuel costs are dragging local economies down.

GREER -- BMW has taken another step in expanding its plant near Greer to build about 240,000 vehicles a year by 2010. The company has obtained a building permit from Spartanburg County to expand its paint shop by at a cost of $26.9 million, said to Mike Padgett, head of the county's building permit office. BMW told the state officials in October that it planned to expand the paint shop's capacity to more than 240,000 vehicles.

ORANGEBURG -- The S.C. State University Board of Trustees met Wednesday via teleconference to announce the members of the presidential search committee to find a replacement for Andrew Hugine, whose contract was not renewed in December. The board hopes to have a new president hired by July. The search committee is comprised of 15 members representing the board of trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni, the South Carolina Legislature and the corporate community.
