Myrtle Beach airport proposal hits CAB today

MYRTLE BEACH -- Plans for Myrtle Beach International Airport are coming up for approval by the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board today, but this time approval is expected. Horry County is presenting its most recently revised proposal for the general aviation terminal, and board President Larry Bragg said he doesn't anticipate any snags.

Sanford wants income tax cut, smoke tax increase

Offering a mixed bag of tax reform Wednesday, Gov. Mark Sanford proposed a flat income tax rate with a 50% cut for those who forego deductions. The governor also wants a 30-cent tax increase on a pack of cigarettes.

Builder Levitt reaches deal

MURRELLS INLET -- Home builder Levitt and Sons made a deal with one of its lenders in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Florida on Wednesday that could affect homes in the company's unfinished Murrells Inlet development. Levitt and Sons reached an agreement with Wachovia Bank, which loaned the company money to secure lots in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina, including the Murrells Inlet retirement community Seasons at Prince Creek West, according to Levitt Corp.

Greenville's Arbor East to offer custom features

GREENVILLE -- Features typically found in custom homes will be in the townhomes under construction in the new Arbor East community. Debra McCormick, a co-owner of the community and an agent with The Home Team, said the 14 units in Arbor East are being constructed by custom homebuilder Gary Hughey, who has built in a number of high-end developments in the Upstate.

Compared to the rest of the country, South Carolina is normally a small fish in a big pond. But when it comes to the business of sport fishing, South Carolina is a big fish in a big pond. The Palmetto State ranks No. 7 in the country in the number of sport fishing jobs and No. 8 in the country in the amount of money spent each year on sport fishing.

DuPont to build plant

BERKELEY COUNTY -- A DuPont official called the company’s plans to build a new $500 million facility next to its existing plant in Berkeley County “the largest DuPont investment in the world.” Building the plant, which will employ 100, is part of the company’s global effort to meet the demand for Kevlar-brand fiber used in airplane parts and in military and police protection vests. The company plans to break ground adjacent to its existing site on the Cooper River in January.
