COLUMBIA -- Loose change, rolling around your car, collecting in the sofa and sitting in jars is getting easier — and less expensive — to be traded for dollars. Banks and credit unions always have accepted change, but the process of having to roll pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters ahead of time often is too time-consuming for customers. To ease coin changing, Palmetto Citizens — one of the state’s largest credit unions — recently installed self-service coin machines in all 11 of its offices.

COLUMBIA -- Richland County Council will vote tonight on property tax breaks for a potential 200-job, $600 million Google data center near Blythewood, but the Silicon Valley company won’t announce before January whether it will build one. The vote comes three months after Google paid $13.1 million for a 466-acre site along I-77. Local officials have dreamed the 80-mile stretch of highway connecting Columbia to Charlotte would become a magnet for high-paying jobs since it opened 26 years ago today.

GREER -- Production of BMW's new X6 sports activity coupe at the company's Greer plant has begun with about a dozen cars assembled daily, with the vehicle to be unveiled to the public at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. It will join more than 50 new models being shown to the world for the first time at Detroit, according to NAIAS. BMW said the plant began building cars about a week ago.

SUMMERVILLE -- American LaFrance has temporarily laid off up to 100 hourly production and salaried personnel in an effort to improve production flow, the company said in a statement. The furlough will begin December 17 and will continue until Jan. 14, 2008. The company hopes to have all employees return to their current positions and wages on January 14. Throughout the furlough period, employees will continue to receive all health insurance benefits and will be eligible for unemployment.

MYRTLE BEACH -- Less than a month is left before the first of two presidential primary debates is held in Myrtle Beach, and local companies are already looking forward to the boost in business. Business leaders say that the debates could be worth between $10 million and $20 million each, with an incalculable return in national and international media exposure.
