MYRTLE BEACH -- Less than a month is left before the first of two presidential primary debates is held in Myrtle Beach, and local companies are already looking forward to the boost in business. Business leaders say that the debates could be worth between $10 million and $20 million each, with an incalculable return in national and international media exposure.

SPARTANBURG -- Frances Fortenberry, 77, of Spartanburg has reported to work at the same plant every day for the past 35 years. A couple of weeks ago, Fortenberry was given a pink slip along with 18 other employees at INA USA Corp.'s manufacturing plant on New Cut Road. INA USA, which makes ball bearings and engine components for Schaeffler Group, its Germany-based parent company, has cut 70 jobs in Spartanburg since August.

CHARLESTON -- Three of the Palmetto State’s oldest accounting firms are joining forces. McKnight Frampton CPAs LLC and Schleeter Monsen & Debacker LLP merged with Elliott Davis LLC, effective Jan. 1, the three firms announced today. Financial terms of the merger were not released. Some of those expanded advisory services are in technology solutions, investment, mergers and banking, grants and economic incentives, real estate and others.

ORANGEBURG -- South Carolina State University’s board of trustees Thursday named Leonard McIntyre as interim university president. The board has begun a national search for a new president. On Tuesday, the board voted not to renew the contract of the current president, Andrew Hugine. The decision was based on Hugine’s most recent annual performance evaluation as well as a May 29 academic review of the university administered by the Education Commission of the States.

GREENVILLE -- Duke Energy said Thursday it submitted a combined construction and operating license application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a proposed two-unit nuclear station in Cherokee County. The company has asked state regulators to approve its decision to spend up to $230 million to develop the nuclear power plant. The company, however, said in a regulatory filing that it hasn't made a final decision to build the William States Lee III Nuclear Station.

GREENVILLE -- The State Ports Authority board Thursday elected David J. Posek of Greenville as chairman, choosing the first Upstate chair of the state-operated port system in more than four decades. Posek, former president of Lockheed Martin's Aircraft and Logistics Centers in Greenville, will serve a two-year term. C.C. Pearce Jr., a Ports Authority board member from Greenville, was chairman from 1961-63.
