Housing stable in Columbia area

COLUMBIA -- Despite a steep decline in Columbia-area home sales in September, real estate agents remain optimistic because of the area’s traditionally stable market. Sales sank 18% in September over the same month last year, with homes staying on the market an average of 85 days, up nearly 15%, according to data from the S.C. Association of Realtors.

Construction supply retailer to open

SPARTANBURG -- Do-it-yourselfers might soon have another home improvement store to frequent for those weekend projects. E.C. Barton and Co., a national retailer of lumber and building materials, plans to open an outlet store from its Surplus Warehouse division in Spartanburg.

Wal-Mart stores in Horry County are on track

MYRTLE BEACH -- Two Wal-Mart stores planned for Horry County are on track. One, near Carolina Forest, has up to two years to start construction, said David Schwerd, principal planner with Horry County.

Strand development strong amid housing slump

MYRTLE BEACH -- Commercial construction is down across the Grand Strand, but local real estate companies report steady, if not increased, activity. Real estate companies point to the future Hard Rock Park and The Market Common as prime examples that commercial development here is alive and well, despite the slowdown in the housing market.

Plant to add 120 jobs

ABBEVILLE COUNTY – Steel fabrication company Carolina Fabrication announced it will locate its headquarters and new manufacturing facility in Abbeville County. The company has purchased and will occupy the former Great Dane (Strick) Plant in the Lakeland’s Industrial Park. The firm will invest more than $5 million and intends to hire 120 people in its first year.

CHARLESTON -- A new home being planned in Charleston is meant to be a model for the nation on how to build durable, energy-efficient homes that are affordable. The house, when finished, might use, for instance, wind or solar power, recycled materials and an irrigation system that recycles bath water or dishwater.
