CHARLESTON -- Local political and business leaders Tuesday gathered downtown to encourage Lowcountry residents to help boost the economy by spending 10% of their dollars at local businesses.

The event was part of the launch of the nonprofit group Lowcountry Local First’s 10% Shift Campaign. Buying from local businesses instead of those based elsewhere will keep money circulating in the region.

“If area consumers and businesses will participate, we can protect jobs and local independently owned companies in this recession,” said Jamee Haley, executive director for Lowcountry Local First. “These events are just the beginning of the campaign, which is truly a grass-roots effort, all without a dime of taxpayer money.”

The group wants people to sign the “Declaration of Independents,” a pledge to support local, independent business with at least 10% of their budgets over the next 12 months.

The 10% Shift Campaign began in New England. Lowcountry Local First says the similar effort in the Charleston area effort is the first in South Carolina and the region.

A launch party for the local campaign is scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m. on July 10 at 10 Storehouse Row on the former Navy base. The party will feature food and drinks from local businesses and live music. Admission is 10 cents.
