COLUMBIA -- Sales of South Carolina’s new lottery game Mega Millions tickets has started off strong, providing players with a second, multi-million dollar jackpot game.

“We had a strong start and noticed players playing both Mega Millions and Powerball,” said Paula Harper Bethea, S.C. Education Lottery executive director.

More than 3,600 SCEL retail outlets are offering Mega Millions tickets. An agreement between the Powerball and Mega Millions groups made it possible for lottery jurisdictions to offer both multi-state jackpot games.

The addition of Mega Millions to the Lottery’s lineup of games stands to potentially increase deposits to the S.C. Education Lottery account. Its first drawing was held Tuesday, and no winner was announced.

Players now have four jackpot drawings each week, with millions of dollars in prizes. Mega Millions jackpots begin at $12 million. Powerball jackpots start at $20 million.

Since the Lottery’s inception in 2002, the General Assembly has appropriated more than $2.2 billion from lottery net proceeds for educational purposes through fiscal year 2010.
