Leadership South Carolina has announced its Class of 2007. Fifty-two
professionals from around the state recently completed the nine-month
leadership development program, which prepares participants to enact
positive change in leadership roles throughout South Carolina. One of
the nation’s oldest leadership development programs, LSC is in its 29th
year.
Each year, about 50 men and women are selected from a pool of about 250
applicants to participate in the program, which features six three-day
sessions at various locations throughout the state. At each session,
business executives, community and government leaders and other
professionals help educate LSC participants about the state’s vital
issues including education, work force development, natural resources,
social concerns and quality of life, among other important topics. The
program’s more than 1,300 alumni include former South Carolina Gov. Jim
Hodges, state Rep. Gilda-Cobb Hunter, D-Orangeburg, state
Superintendent of Education Jim Rex and former state Superintendent of
Education Inez Tenenbaum.

“You can never have too many people in the state who understand what
issues are important,” said Helen Munnerlyn, LSC executive director.
“Our participants learn how avoid making change simply to make change,
but they learn how to realize where changes are productive.”
Currently, LSC is accepting applications for its Class of 2008.
Qualified applicants often have previously been involved within their
communities in some type of leadership role. Some have even completed
local leadership development programs, but would like to broaden their
knowledge to a statewide level.
“We have a history of recruiting people who are interested in running
for office at some point in their career—whether on a statewide, county
or local level,” Munnerlyn said. “We like to choose a group of people
who truly want to make a difference in South Carolina.”
