A recent survey from the Pew Center reveals full-time working moms rate themselves a little lower as parents than their counterparts who work part-time or stay at home with their children. In addition, the survey found 60% of working moms would rather be working part-time. The interesting part of that statistic is that it has grown from 48% a decade ago.

You can read the full story here. This article poses the question that maybe it’s not possible to have it all as past feminist ideals would have us believe.

Are more women trading the board room for the playground? Is our society and our work force going through a shift when it comes to mothers who work full-time and have a family?

What are you seeing in your workplace? What decisions are you and your co-workers making when it comes to working and raising a family?

A lessonin priorities
written by Julie Hussey on September 06, 2007

As a mother of two boys - 4 and 2 - working from home, I am a full-time person managing a ton of part-time jobs: mother, housewife, pr professional, business owner, childcare employer, house manager, and in my extra time a loving wife and "personal trainer." It sounds crazy and on many days it is, but I am also learning just because I do my client's work at night it still counts as work. Life's errands take a lot more time than anyone wants to admit (especially my husband).

I am also keenly aware my life isn't just mine but a web of community supported by others who can either work with the program or work against it.

Perhaps there was a time in our country when the majority of workers clocked in to work and clocked out when they weren't working - but I think those days are over if they really ever existed. Just showing up does have its place, but just because I am on "company time" doesn't always mean I am there.

I am operating on "life time" which is less about quartering off my day and more about recognizing life is a flow with lots of demands checked by the priorities I give them.

My decisions in balancing work and family are to trust that my intentions are in the right place, I am honest with others and myself, and I don't shirk responsibliities. So far it is working - check back with me in 30 minutes
