Holiday sales start strong

GREENVILLE -- After what appeared to be a strong start to 2007 holiday shopping, retailers are hoping customers will keep buying in a season that some forecasters are saying will be the weakest in five years. Shoppers had been pulling back in recent months amid a challenging economy, making retailers unsure, but stores and malls attracted bigger-than-expected crowds over the Thanksgiving Day weekend.
