Lisa Kluczinsky, human resources manager with Johnson & Johnson Inc., just can’t say enough about her employer.
“Since the day I was hired, I felt like this was the best-kept secret in Charleston,” she said of the insurance company, which is unrelated to the publicly traded pharmaceutical firm of the same name.
The owners are down-to-earth and approachable. They have an open-door policy and keep a keen focus on employees, she said.
Johnson & Johnson has offered a company wellness program for a number of years with such perks as annual flu shots, reimbursement for health club memberships, an on-site company gym and an annual wellness and employee appreciation day.
The company is active with Trident United Way, with employees pledging $50,000 in 2008 and the company matching that contribution.
Tightly focused on employee education, Johnson & Johnson has achieved the certified general managing agent designation from the Association of Managing General Agents. That organization requires each employee to have eight hours of education; Johnson & Johnson employees more than doubled that number with a combined 1,700 hours of education.
Monthly town hall-style meetings—complete with catered lunch—give Johnson & Johnson’s 96 employees a chance to hear about the company’s financial performance and recognize employees with service awards, employee of the month honors and other tributes.
“Education and family are two of the most important parts of our culture,” Kluczinsky said, noting that having fun is a key third element to the company’s vision.
“It’s a fun work environment,” Kluczinsky said. “We work hard, but we play hard.”
