John E. Barilich

John E. Barilich was named VA Medical Center director in December 2006, having previously served as acting network director for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Integrated Service Network 10 based in Cincinnati. A native of Indiana, Barilich is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He earned his master’s degree in social work from Indiana University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas-Arlington, Indiana University, University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana, Loyola University of Chicago, University of Illinois-Chicago Circle and Chicago Medical School. Barilich is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, American Hospital Association, Society of Social Work Leaders in Healthcare and the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Allen P. Carroll

Allen P. Carroll also serves as senior vice president of operations for Roper St. Francis Healthcare. He began his employment with Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in 1990 as vice president of operations. In April 1993, his role changed to become vice president in charge of designing, constructing and relocating to the new hospital facility in West Ashley. In 1996, he was named CEO of Bon Secours St. Francis and executive vice president for Bon Secours Health System Inc. When Roper and St. Francis Hospitals merged in 1998, he was named to his current position. Prior to his employment with St. Francis Hospital, Carroll served as assistant administrator at HCA Highland Hospital in Shreveport, La., and as an administrative resident at New Hanover Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, N.C.
Neal D. Coyle

A graduate of the Air Force Academy, Neal D. Coyle served in the Air Force for 25 years. As a B-52 pilot, he was an instructor pilot, squadron commander, group commander and wing commander. He held assignments in several headquarters, including two tours at the Pentagon, before retiring in 1997 as a colonel. Since then, Coyle held senior management positions in administrative operations and sales with Physicians Health Plan (now Carolina Care Plan) and Humana, and now leads the WellPath effort to expand in South Carolina.
David L. Dunlap

A career hospital executive, David L. Dunlap began his career more than 30 years ago. Prior to coming to Charleston, he was president and CEO of Memorial Medical Center, a two-hospital system in New Orleans. Before that, he was CEO of University Health Partners, a multi-hospital system in Oklahoma City. While there, his hospitals and medical staff were among the first to respond to the tragedy that resulted from the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Dunlap serves as a board member for S.C. Hospital Association, Trident United Way, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, S.C. Chamber of Commerce and Trident Technical College Foundation.
Dr. Raymond S. Greenberg
President, Medical University of South Carolina

Dr. Raymond S. Greenberg has focused on restoring the university hospital’s fiscal health through a combination of organizational restructuring and operational improvements, allowing the university to undertake a replacement of its aging hospital facilities. Greenberg also has placed a strong emphasis on statewide outreach and collaboration. The state’s three research universities and four largest teaching hospitals have joined together in the formation of Health Sciences South Carolina to improve health, advance medical research, and stimulate economic development. Prior to coming to Charleston, Greenberg served on the medical school faculty at Emory University and was the founding dean of the Rollins School of Public Health there. He arrived at MUSC in 1995 as the vice president for academic affairs and provost.
Terry J. Gunn

Terry J. Gunn is also the president and CEO of Trident Health System, a three-hospital health system in Charleston. A 19-year veteran of HCA, Gunn started his career as an administrative resident at Baptist Memorial Health System in Memphis, Tenn., where he was later promoted to assistant administrator. He served as the CEO of Stones River Hospital in Woodbury, Tenn., and River Park Hospital in McMinnville, Tenn. Prior to joining Trident Health System in September 2004, Gunn was the president and CEO of Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Ga. Gunn serves on the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce board of directors, Trident Technical College Foundation board of directors, Trident United Way and the American Heart Association.
Matthew Severance

Matthew Severance joined Roper Hospital in 1990 following graduate school, when he worked as an administrative resident in various administrative capacities, including an interim role as the hospital’s CEO. In 2001, he worked as chief operating officer and executive vice president for Lawrence Hospital Center in Bronxville, N.Y., where he remained until returning to Roper Hospital in 2004. Severance is a member of St. Andrews Rotary, Education Foundation Board and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and served as chair of the American Heart Association Heart Walk 2006.
