The yW Empowerment Center, primarily targeted at women, has opened in the YWCA located in Greenville. Seminars and workshops will help women create a life plan, become economically empowered and offer help to budding female entrepreneurs.
I particularly love the slogan on their Web site: “The corporate ladder can be climbed in heels.”
Here are some stats I pulled from the center’s Web site that illustrate the need for these kinds of services.
• South Carolina’s wage gap between men’s and women’s earnings is 29 cents per dollar, 2 cents larger than the national wage gap of 27 cents.
• Between 1979 and 1999, the wage gap decreased half as quickly in South Carolina as nationally.
• Women in South Carolina are also much less likely to be self-employed than women nationally. In 1999, 3.6% of employed women in South Carolina were self-employed, compared with 6.1% of women nationwide.
Visit the center’s Web site for information on how you can get involved.
