Principal, Laurel Hill Primary School
With a degree in design from Clemson University, Michael Antonelli was working with an architectural firm in which many of his projects involved school design and speaking at schools about the architectural profession.
“I recognized that there was a real need for more male educators in elementary schools, and I also enjoyed working with children,” he said.
At the same time, Antonelli was volunteering with his church youth group and coaching the Charleston InnerCity Midnight Basketball league. His younger brother had also dropped out of high school in New York. Antonelli and his wife, a teacher, convinced him to finish high school in Charleston.
“Working daily with (my brother) was a major influence in my career change. After much prayer, I felt called to switch careers and began teaching art at the elementary level. After teaching for a few years I realized that I could make an even greater impact on children as a school administrator.”
Now, Antonelli runs the largest elementary school in Charleston County, Laurel Hill Primary, which opened in 2006 in Mount Pleasant.
