Executive director, HALOS

Pursuing a career in human services came naturally for Kim Clifton. She started working with nonprofits when she was 15 years old. After a year of community service with VISTA, she knew a graduate degree in social work was the next step.

Clifton worked aboard in a developing country before coming to Charleston and joining HALOS, a nonprofit that provides resources and opportunities to abused and neglected children and their caregivers.

Clifton volunteers with Lutheran Hospice, providing respite for caregivers or companionship to hospice patients. She also is becoming licensed as a foster parent in Charleston County so she can help two young adults who are in foster care and in college. And Clifton is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Once a year, Clifton gives herself a reality check by asking the following questions: Did I make a contribution? Was I fairly compensated? Did I grow? Did I have fun?

“If I follow this advice, I find I am more peaceful and contented,” she said.

Best stress reliever: For me, spending some down time alone, reading, with my two dogs nearby, and not turning on the computer or answering the phone.

Favorite vacation spot: Italy.

First job: My father’s dry cleaners in Savannah, Ga.

Favorite hour of the day and why: Early morning. I really like waking up early and having mornings to myself to work, reading the paper, or just have time to myself before everyone else wakes up and starts moving. I find that I can get more accomplished in early morning hours than the rest of the day.

It was good to see a person as talented as Kim Clifton be honored and recognized for the hard work she does. As a volunteer for Lutheran Hospice, Kim is always ready and available to help where she can. She understands the impact volunteers can make on a non-profit organization, and even with her busy schedule, always has time to see our hospice patients. Congratulations to Kim!
