Chief operating officer, WINGS for kids

Bridget Laird always wanted a profession that would give her the opportunity to help others, particularly children. As chief operating officer for WINGS for kids, Laird teaches children to behave well, make responsible decisions, understand themselves and build good relationships.

“We give kids a strong social and emotional education hidden within an amazingly fresh and fun after-school program,” she said.

WINGS for kids serves 120 students each day, but Laird’s goal is to serve thousands.

In between working and caring for her 3-year-old daughter, Laird is helping a 17-year-old boy who is incarcerated. She visits with him, drives his mother to visits and is working on his post-release plan.

“I really hope he can find success upon release. I know several other boys who look up to him. I know that if I can help him, I will in turn be helping those boys as well.”

Books on your nightstand: “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert and lots of nonfiction focusing on kids who have had a rough upbringing and are now successful.

Best stress reliever: Exercising. I jog, spin, surf, Rollerblade and play soccer, basketball, softball and golf — I like to sweat.

Favorite hour of the day and why: Noon. The weather is usually the best at this hour.  Also the mornings tend to be full of “surprises” (work and daughter). By noon, things are less chaotic, and I feel like I can conquer what else is thrown at me during the remainder of the day.

Bridget does an incredible job in getting great people working with the WINGS program. The staff is excellent with the kids and the program is terrific!

Bridget is one of those very special people who excels at everything she puts her head and hand to. Whatever she gets involved in, she gives it everything she has. She is the very best of her generation...kind, funny, sensible, hard working, ETHICAL (a rarity in this day and age) funny and smart.
