Lowcountry coordinator for U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn
Clay Middleton’s professional goal is to become an effective elected official. Right now he’s learning from experienced Congressman James E. Clyburn, who represents the 6th Congressional District of South Carolina and serves as Democratic majority whip in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Middleton conducts monthly field visits to Charleston, Colleton, Berkeley and Georgetown counties to provide constituent services while working with government agencies, community organizations, business and municipalities on federal matters.
“I have always had an interest in politics,” Middleton said. “I feel that government can truly help people.”
A captain in the S.C. Army National Guard, Middleton is active in the community, serving on the board of directors of the Charleston Youth Leadership Council Beaux Affair Rites of Passage Program, Charleston Junior Golf Foundation, Charleston Area Community Development Corp., Greater Charleston Empowerment Corp., the City of Charleston Homeownership Initiative Commission and Charleston Development Academy Governance.
He is chairman of the Lawrence A. Holt Endowment Fund and the board of directors of the Carolina Empowerment Group, a committee member of the Veterans and Military Families for Progress — Government Affairs and Operations/Projects and a member of the executive council of the National Guard Association of South Carolina.
