Diversification has brought significant growth to Atlantic Building Components & Services Inc. over the past year. The company is now divided among four divisions: turnkey framing, residential plan design services, structural engineering and the original business, truss manufacturing.

But the creation of the turnkey framing division has proven to be the most successful, said James H. Broach Jr., vice president for operations.

In turnkey framing, Atlantic Building Components gives a contractor a fixed price for all the material and labor to frame a structure. Project managers review the plans with the contractor prior to construction. This review removes both the contractor’s burden of labor management and risk of material waste; instead, it’s all part of the construction contract.

Because of the firm’s volume of work, it also gets more competitive lumber prices.
This new focus on turnkey framing has led to tremendous growth in wood framing of commercial and multifamily projects throughout the entire state of South Carolina, he said.

Between 2005 and 2006, the company reported a 30% increase in revenue.

To maintain its growth, Atlantic Building Components & Services has found leadership to be an important focus. Each of the company’s four divisions operates as an independent company with its own management and operating teams, Broach said.

For Broach, it’s critical those managers possess a high level of integrity.

“Truly care for your employees and look out for your customers’ best interest,” he said. “If you and your management team continuously focus on these things, the profits will take care of themselves. Additionally, don’t underestimate the importance of quality employees. Find ‘A’ players and pay them like an ‘A.’ If you pay peanuts, you’ll get peanuts.”
