By diversifying its services, SGM Architects Inc. is able to weather market storms while riding the waves of market surges, said Thomas “Tommy” N. Smith, company president.
The firm cautiously pursues new clients, new market sectors and new projects. Several years ago, SGM Architects chose a slow-growth strategy, turning away several projects and limiting how fast the company grew, Smith said.
But as client needs expanded, the company knew it had to grow along with them. All the while, SGM Architects has been working to maintain and increase the quality of its work while keeping up with that growth, Smith said.
Between 2005 and 2006, the firm saw revenue increase by 62% — an indication its slow-growth strategy is paying off.
Aside from the growth of clients and the overall market, Smith attributed the company’s success to hiring and retaining the best staff possible.
This also requires the company to constantly analyze how it manages projects and staff, particularly as the staff grows in number and projects change.
A quality staff along with a careful approach to changes in the marketplace allows SGM Architects to keep up with competition.
“We pride ourselves on our adaptability to our clients’ needs,” Smith said. “This adaptability gives us a competitive edge and keeps us at the ready as the marketplace changes.”
