 Counter Culture: Firm’s corporate culture focuses on well the individual
With nearly 9,000 U.S. branch offices and more than 8 million clients, Edward Jones sounds like a perfect place to lose individual needs. However, the company’s unique business model requires a singular devotion to doing what’s right for its clients and for its employees.
Edward Jones was founded on the principle that the people who work for the company are the source of its success. The firm fosters a culture of caring for associates who, in turn, take care of clients. There are no formal programs to promote a balance between work and life, just an unwritten and well-practiced policy to “do the right thing,” the company said.
The entrepreneurial spirit at Edward Jones allows individuals to be their own boss with no up-front costs. Each investment representative gets his or her own office, equipment and a full-time assistant, all supplied by the firm.
“We have a one-person office,” said Wendell Jones, an Edward Jones partner in South Carolina.
Edward Jones is a privately held company, which allows employees to work for the good of the company instead of the good of the shareholders, according to Jones. The better the firm does, the more financial reward associates receive in terms of bonuses, profit-sharing and partnership returns.
The opportunity to work for Edward Jones may not be for everybody since it requires hard work and dedication but, according to the firm, employees are paid back by owning a part of a successful company.
Along with this statewide recognition, Edward Jones ranked 16th on Fortune’s overall “Best Companies to Work For” list and fourth among firms its size.
