No. 1 Medium Company: FGP International Print E-mail

fgpinternationalFind Great People and keep them

FGP stands for Find Great People, and the company stands by that motto. As a professional employment recruiter, FGP knows the value of a good worker and rewards him or her. With fewer than 50 employees, FGP offers trips to the Caribbean and shopping sprees at the mall, and pays 100% of an employee’s health insurance.

Tacked above the desk of FGP President John Uprichard is a postcard that reads: “Fun is Good.” That postcard and the sentiment expressed are those of Charleston businessman Mike Veeck, president of the Charleston RiverDogs Baseball Club.

“People like to have fun,” Uprichard said. “When they come to work, they need a smile on their face and a spring in their step.”

Air hockey tables, foosball tables and scooters are placed throughout the office, reminding employees to have fun while being successful. There’s even a putting green where employees can be seen talking on the phone to clients while sinking short putts.

“We’re always trying to create these little ideas for relaxation,” said Eddie Payne, FGP director of professional staffing. “At end of the day, you have to have fun (to be successful).”

It is never an issue to get people to work, according to Uprichard.

“If we have to manage you really closely, you’re probably not the right person for this team,” Uprichard said. “It’s a tough team to make, but a great team to be on.”

In the last four years, FGP has experienced 1,000% revenue growth. Recently, FGP was ranked No. 228 on Inc. magazine’s list of the country’s 500 fastest-growing businesses.

Uprichard credits happy employees with the company’s fast-paced growth and competitiveness.
