Weak economy hits workers

GREENVILLE -- The number of newly laid off workers in the United States soared past 400,000 last week as companies pared their work forces to deal with a weak economy and the real estate collapse in many parts of the country. Greenville hasn't seen big layoffs, but the county has experienced small numbers of workers laid off from various companies, according to Charlie Haneman, area director of the Greenville office of the state Employment Security Commission.
