First home gets solar panels through Santee Cooper initiative

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- Crews on Thursday put finishing touches on 20 solar panels that are now soaking up rays on the roof of the Houghton family's house. The flat, black strips are barely visible from the ground, but they can generate up to 3,300 watts during the peak time of day. The panels were the first installed as part of Santee Cooper's Solar Homes Initiative -- the only program of its kind in the state. The program offers homeowners in Horry, Georgetown and Berkeley counties the chance to get up to $17,500 in rebates and tax credits to go toward paying for and installing the panels.
