AVX asks to release chemicals at MB facility |

MYRTLE BEACH -- AVX Corp., the company responsible for toxic groundwater contamination in a 10-block Myrtle Beach neighborhood, has asked state regulators for permission to emit hazardous air pollution in the same area near its 17th Avenue South headquarters. Among the pollutants would be toluene, an industrial solvent that can cause brain and central nervous system damage, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The air pollution would result from a manufacturing method -- called reverse thin tape process -- that electronics manufacturer AVX wants to install.
